It's difficult to say what the best exercise to lose belly fat is because there are so many of them. There isn't just one magic exercise that you can do to lose fat around your tummy. You have to do all round routines that burn fat through increased metabolism.

This will not happen. The best exercise to lose belly fat doesn't necessarily involve any extra equipment. Here are a few exercises you can do to firm and flatten your abdominal muscles and you can do them easily in the comfort of your own home.

1. First there is the hip lift

To perform this lie on your back with your arms by your sides. Keeping your knees as straight as possible raise your legs until the soles of your feet are facing the ceiling. Ideally you legs will be at a right-angle to your torso but don't worry if they are not. Mine are not when I do this exercise.

Now contract your abs so they pull your hips up and towards your belly button, keeping your legs vertical. When your hips are a few inches above the floor hold the position for a few seconds. Then slowly lower them back to earth.

2. Next the abdominal tuck

Lie on the floor facing down. Make sure you are comfortable then pull in your stomach muscles towards your spine. Contract them as far as possible then hold for 30 seconds. Relax and then rest for 10 seconds before repeating.

3. Finally the crunch

You don't need to be doing old fashion sit ups like you used to see. All you need to do is make a movement of a few inches.

Lie on your back with your legs bent at 90 degrees so your feet are flat on the floor. With your hands by your sides, lift your upper body slowly starting from your shoulders. Keep your chin pointing to the ceiling as one by one your vertebrae lift off the floor. Hold for 3 seconds.

If you are eating too many of the wrong foods you will retain some fat on your stomach. You would have to be doing some serious physical activity to burn off all the fat from what has become the average diet these days.

But if you combine a good diet with training three times a week you can have the body you want. You will be able to burn fat through strength and resistance exercises and keep the fat off by eating sensible foods.
